The Pilates Method is a system of exercises designed to increase strength and flexibility in the body without adding bulk. Created by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20thcentury the method focuses on the core postural muscles. The idea is that prior to working the peripheral parts of the body the core needs to be strong and stable. While rehabilitating soldiers during WWI he used hospital bed springs to create an apparatus that would assist in achieving this connection. In working with the resistance of the springs, deeper and smaller intrinsic muscles are recruited. This strengthening effect provides support for larger muscles and lays a foundation for the body to function optimally. Upon this discovery, his first piece of apparatus, the Cadillac, was born. In 1926 Joseph Pilates opened his first studio in New York and spent the rest of his life revising and improving his method until his death in 1967. The Pilates Method rids the body of chronic weakness and works to correct imbalances. A regular practice will create a strong, energized and pain free body.
